EYE CANDY

Captured: America in Color from 1939-1943

These images, by photographers of the Farm Security Administration/Office of War Information, are some of the only color photographs taken of the effects of the Depression on America’s rural and small town populations.

WEIRD.

Ok, I have a potentially offensive question...

In the tank crew picture, is the guy in the middle South-East Asian, or is he just a really dirty white guy?

For suffering through the great depression, they sure are dressed well. I don't have any coats or hats like that.

Yeah, if it was so bad, why does everyone keep calling it "great?"

These are great. They really bring you closer to that time rather than the typical black and white photographs.

If I had my way, I'd have someone else rather than Spanky post the link to this so it could be on the Front Page. But I know this is part of his plan to make the Backwash the new Front Page and the Front Page the new 4chan.

You sly bastard, you.

Black and white photos are color pictures of a black and white world...

Black and white photos at the time turned to color when everything else did. DUH!

I noticed that too. Everything from the torch itself to the cylinder trolley and even most of his PPE are identical to today's standards.

#27 of the Shasta Dam, that's where I live. Not the damn, of course, but in Redding CA. I can't imagine how hot it was when they were building that. It's like 105 outside right now, and it's a cool day. Everytime I've gone to that dam I've been blown away by the scope of it. It's absolutely huge.

A few years ago they opened up the spillway on the top of the dam. It was some big old event for this shitty town, but it was amazing to watch the ridiculous ton s of driftwood that had built up go flying out the top of the dam.

I love in the comments where people have been grousing about the term "African American" being used in some of the photo captions.
Trust me - that's much better than what the captions originally were in the 1940's.
I'm sure they changed them when they posted the pictures, thinking they were being sensitive.
Not sensitive enough for some, apparently.

I didn't look at the comments there, but I was also thinking about how annoying it was that almost every time there was a black person in the photo they had to point it out. I hear that shit all the time living in Atlanta. People always mention that a person is black when relating a story regardless of how irrelevant it is.

>some of the only color photographs

Has anyone else noticed the lack of meaning in this sentence?
I mean .. if these were the only photographs I would get it.
but saying "some of the only..." is like saying I'm one of the only people on this planet. It says nothing about how many people there are on the planet.

some of the VERY FEW color photographs...

that's better.

Nice photos, btw.
