There sure are a lot of little lightnings during the long big lightning.
That's what the ladies call me, by the way. "Long, big lightning."

Because they're likely to incur fatal injuries if they touch you?

A split second of actual action followed by a lot of noise and rumbling?

Precisely.
:highfive:
So they finally found something that's not as cool when you slow it down, huh?

Is that because you're done in a flash?
So was that lightning striking the same place like 5 times?

We are getting closer to figuring out how you work.
Can we slow down magnets?
I think I'm more impressed at 9K FPS.

I'm wondering, if the electrons in lightning move at the speed of light(186,000 miles per second), then how fast are those little "sprites"(tiny quick flashes) travelling?
Science and nature are AWESOME!

AND electrons don't move at the speed of light.
Read this: http://amasci.com/miscon/speed.html
At some point, that guy comes up with like 3.4in/hr, under the conditions he mentioned.
In fact, they wouldn't move much at all in lightning, I wouldn't think.

Bill Beaty is a smart guy, obviously. As someone who works in the field, I disagree with some of his theory.

That was insane! Even at 9k FPS some of the flashes were still happening too fast to see! My mind is blown

Here's a bit of info on the subject...
"With electricity, the overall effect from one end of a conductor to the other happens at the speed of light: a swift 186,000 miles per second!!!"
And my question about electron flow was incorrect. The speed of electrical current is what I was questioning...sorry.

Say - it really does go up.
And the multiple flashes that took the same path.
That was badass.

Ah, yes, whenever I see a bolt of lightning starting at 3.4 inches above my head, I usually get out of the way within the hour.

The first part of that spelled "Hi" backwards. Maybe God's dyslexic. Actually, it later says "IVH", which I'm sure is supposed to be "HIV". Maybe lightning causes HIV? It's a sign!

I think that spot near the middle that was getting hammered was a lighting rod. The lightning was definitely hitting a point above the ground. I wonder how much Dark sky this guy filmed before he actually got a lighting strike @ 9000 fps
Jul 30th, 2010 (12:16 PM)
It's so impressive how the strikes follow almost the exact same path each time. Least resistance ftw.
BTW was expecting some over 9000 jokes...I was disappointed.

Yeah, the crack is actually the lighting ionizing the air and basically creating a channel of plasma. Once the path is there it acts as a wire until the plasma disperses and it's gotta re-ionize. Lightning is certainly super cool, but is completely useless as a power source.

lightning struck a light pole about 30 feet from the window I was standing by a few days ago, scared the shat out of me and my roomate, we heard a loud sizzle the whole room illuminated, and then it sounded like a gun shot immediatley afterwards
