OH SNAP!

Bush Whacked

USC president-elect Max Nikias announced Tuesday in a letter addressed to "Members of the USC Trojan Family" that the school will return its copy of (Reggie) Bush's award to the Heisman Trophy Trust and remove "all jerseys and murals" that recognize the running back's college career by mid-August.

This was mandated by the NCAA anyway - part of the penalty was that u$c had to disassociate themselves from Bush and OJ Mayo including removing jerseys, banners, etc. from campus.

But you can count on them keeping those OJ Simpson jerseys on display!

SC's star players in basketball and football were busted by the NCAA for receiving $$ or other benefits. It was pretty blatant but the university turned a blind eye. Now they're paying the price for a "lack of institutional control" which sounds pathetic but is about as bad as it gets.

In football, they vacated wins, lost their national championship, lost scholarships, can't play in bowl games, and Bush is likely to have his Heisman stripped next week.

Which serves them right!

I understand that college players aren't supposed to receive money while they are playing. What I'm having a hard time understanding is how did that give Bush or Mayo an unfair advantage that made them better athletes and require the negation of victories that they had?

It doesn't give him an unfair advantage. It gives teams that allow this behavior an unfair advantage in recruiting.

I still play baseball and indoor hockey in adult community leagues. It's fun and obviously great exercise. My son is currently being scouted by colleges in different states for a football scholarship right now. My son works very hard and is very talented. He even manages to hold down a 3.8-4.0 GPA while doing it all. Over the last 6 months or so worth of dealings with various schools courting my son, I have come to realize first-hand that College Football brings in a tremendous amount of money to a school, and the kids get a free degree (in most cases), but somehow are not fairly compensated for all their hard work bringing in that cash for the school. We all know a college degree from a big time school is worth its weight in gold. For most people at those schools, football is not a life long career. College athletes will need to fall back on their degree in their post playing days. So maybe the scholarship should be reward enough.

However, while I understand why some people cheat, and that some student athletes take kickbacks to get ahead, I have a hard time buying that it takes so long for this stuff to come to light. Why is it that every time we hear about NCAA rule violations, for the most part the person in question has already begun their pro career and the school has to take the full weight of the punishment for their misconduct?

The thing about College Football, and all college sports for that matter, is that any big time program has without a doubt broken rules along the way. Most recently, it's Reggie Bush USC Trojans, the UNC football program, and now it looks like the Florida Gators too. The NCAA isn't much different than pro sports franchises when it comes to money. It is all about the money. College ball is the doorway to pro sports and as such, it is subject to some of the pitfalls of pro sports. The NCAA players good enough to go pro, they know it. They are bathed in it. They are courted and spoiled and attended to by pro teams and sponsors like they're the most importatnt person in the world. The temptations are insidious and very hard to resist.

Then Professional Sports, at every level and in every capacity, is simply just a scam for money. Period.

So-called Professional Players whine and cry like bitches that they don't get paid enough and go on strikes when they're making 10's of millions of dollars just to play a fucking schoolyard game involving a ball. I don't think there's a single industry which involves as much unearned salary as professional sports. Owners whine and cry like bitches that they don't make enough money and they double and triple the costs to attend games while the omnipresent corporate sponsorships are being shoved into our heads constantly. Sports fans whine and cry like bitches that it costs too much and their teams don't do well enough, but they keep pumping that money out for all the other whiny crying bitches anyway.

In fact, rabid Sports fans are a very special breed. I don't mean special as in admirable or interesting or even remarkable. I mean special as in completely frickin' retarded. When you're talking about people who don't do a damned thing with their leisure time except to idolize overpaid underworked multi-millionaires while watching those overpaid underworked multi-millionaires throwing, kicking, or hitting a childhood toy that is only being done because other people will pay to watch them, you're well out of "breed" and are pushing into "species" territory.

I am very proud of my son, and I know he will make the best of his scholarship whichever school he decides to loan his talent to in exchange for that education worth its weight in gold. He has truly lived up to and certainly surpassed my hopes and prayers for him from before he was born, and he still does today, and he has surpassed his own expectations of himself. But it scares me too as my eyes are opened ever wider to the potential pitfalls of college ball and the pariah he could become even well after his college career if he succumbs to the ever present temptations.

So college athletes who, obvious to everyone, are good enough to go pro don't diverse a little wining and dining from sponsors and pro scouts? It's unethical? They should consider the degree that they earn (or is given to them, my spouse works for Penn State I have a few suspicions about the "earning" part) as payment enough? All this is an issue while pro-basketball scouts are picking kids right from high schools... I really don't get sports.

Kim dumped him, Miles Austin is hitting that now.

He won the Super Bowl ring as a role player on the team. By contrast, the Heisman was given to him for being the very best individual player in college football. You really think having his records and memory scrubbed from the USC campus and his award nullified will have no impact on him?

You've never succeeded at anything in your life, have you?

Waaaaaa Kim dumped him wow oh well brush dem shoulders off plenty off ass out there for him.

Your comments prove you know nothing about professional sports. College kids don't bust there balls to get a Heisman fool! They play to get to the pros for the opportunity to win the ultimate prize a championship. Same with Lebron. He ain't shit till he gets a ring. He may have millions of dollars, endless INDIVIDUAL awards but without that ring he is NOTHING!!!

Yeah he will be DISAPPOINTED in his records being scrubbed but, in all honesty who gives a fuck. He has accomplished his goal of winning a championship and will be remembered for his NFL career not how he showed off in college on a monopoly built college team competing in a cupcake division.

Reggie Bush knew what he was doing so stop riding his dick and feeling sorry for him.

Uhhh... what?

...and you have the gall to suggest that I know nothing about sports? Dude... you're an idiot. There's really no other way to put it. You don't understand that college football is more popular, with a bigger fan base, than the NFL. You don't get that achievement, at every step of the way, is a source of pride. You don't get that the vast, vast majority of players never get to the pros, and they don't consider their careers wasted, nor do they consider themselves to be "nothing".

Feeling sorry for him? No, not really. But it's fucked up that they'll take away the awards he earned for his skills on the field, but won't take a dime from his former coach, the agents who fucked him over, or anyone else who made a mint off of him while he was at USC.

I worked at a camera store in college with a guy who was the starting center for the Seminoles. He'd come into work and immediately all these rich guys came in looking to buy cameras specifically from him. It seemed like an arrangement by Seminole supporters. That guy would make more on commissions in a half hour than I could make all week.
What are you gonna do. Personally, I'd rather they just allow all the stuff up front. So many people make money off of college football that it's ridiculous to think the players aren't going to make any.
I realize it's a separate issue from talking with pro-agents. But I think it's relavant to the larger issue of the economics of college football.
