It seems like movies with engaging storylines and character developments do well too.
It seems like there's just a lazy blockbuster recipe that is used in Hollywood to make an easy buck, but no one would be against better movies.
But I don't really know much about the industry.

These are my thoughts exactly...well, I guess I agree with the opposing view point as well. I'm sure that a large portion of America are these blissfully ignorant vegetable flavored people, but Hollywood also houses a bunch of lazy producers who are unimaginative and want quick cash. Either way, people need entertainment, so they'll watch just about anything in the theaters.

Major studios make retarded movies for retarded mass audiences to make ridiculous amounts of money. While I personally loathe movies like those, I appreciate the role they play. Those movies keep the major studios profitable so they can keep their minor studios alive and free to make the kinds of movies I like to see. Most major studios have their own independent film studios: 20th Century Fox has Fox Searchlight, NBC Universal has Focus Features, etc. And it's those giant blockbusters that fund the distribution of the smaller, artier movies that come out of those independent branches.
