FL doesn't have state income tax and I think that would be huge to a king.
This stuff, coming out of the mouth of an f'n owner is borderline inappropriate. There was a second quote coming later in the night that was even harsher. I'm guessing that the league might discipline Gilbert...

While it's been quite a while since my last visit to the mistake-by-the-lake (my hometown - GO North Olmsted!), I don't understand the assumption that a sports star, at the peak of his game, would be looked down upon by putting manna before sentimentality/loyalty. If someone offered me that kind of money, I'd disavow my family, change my name and eat a pound of dog droppings - all with a smile on my face.

"I don't understand the assumption that a sports star, at the peak of his game, would be looked down upon by putting manna before sentimentality/loyalty."
it's not even the money. lebron left money on the table by virtue that the cba allows a free agent's former team to offer more years - and, therefore, more money - than any other team.
i find it ridiculous that people are so pissed off over this. how does this change anyone's life, aside from those directly involved? so what, the guy went to miami so he could play with a couple guys who he wanted to play with and, perhaps, where he felt he had a better shot at a championship. the owner just comes off as a petulant 5 year old crying because he didn't get what he wanted. this is business, and the cavaliers didn't/weren't able to offer lebron what he wanted. do you think the cavaliers would have signed james out of loyalty? do they sign basketball players from ohio out of loyalty, even though they can't give the team what it wants?

It was unseemly how many cities were nut-hugging Lebron. One mayor changed a street name to Lebron Way or something. One mayor made a youtube video singing to Lebron. Do basketball players really bring that much income to a city?
It would appear that the only thing the city gets is revenue from taxes on tickets, all the other money he generates goes into the NBA engine and eventually to all the players. Why do so many people care that Lebron went one place or another?
Oh, and why the Comic Sans hate? I saw several people mention it. Does it have some hidden negative or historical meaning?
Dude likes his "quotation marks."
people are getting their panties in a twist for a guy who changed teams. hahahaha. I bet some fans cried at the bar during the announcement, must have been hilarious to be in Cleveland that night
Who cares what team he plays for, the important thing is what's he going to wear and where can I buy it so I can look cool?
Do basketball players really bring that much income to a city?
Celebrity, winning records and championships do.
why the Comic Sans hate?
It was introduced fifteen years ago and is basically the equivalent of an exclamation point at the end of a joke's punchline:
It's supposed to make things fun, exciting, whimsical, and dynamic,
When really it's just obnoxious and childish.
Using it for something serious like this just emphasizes how stupid and lazy the author is.

One of my favorite explanations says that, unless it's being used for something like an invitation to a kid's birthday party, it is "analogous to showing up for a black tie event in a clown costume."
Thanks Rabbiwanna, I had no idea about the Comic Sans. But about the other thing: did people really go out of their way to visit Cleveland when Lebron was there? Plus, I heard that Lebron never really won anything... ever.
I've been in the US for a handful of years and one of the sports I've latched on to is American Football (it's almost as good as Rugby... almost.) I live in Manhattan, so the team to cheer on is the New York Jets or the New York Giants. For some stupid reason, both teams share the same stadium and the stadium is located in New Jersey. Now, it's true, after Eli Manning won the Superbowl, I was all keen to see a game, so I purchased a ticket online, took a coach bus to the Stadium, bought a light up mug for my girlfriend and some beer, bought a program and when I left, I took the same bus home. Maybe I spent $200, NJ probably saw $10 of that. If I were a season ticket holder, multiply that by the number of home games, it just doesn't seem like the kind of money that would make Betty White do a PSA about Lebron.
I certainly can understand everyone in Cleveland being sad about this self-absorbed sports hero leaving them to go to greener pastures, but not knowing the full situation myself, I have some questions for those of you that do:
1. Did the ownership of the Cavaliers make a seriously competitive offer to LeBron? Or did they attempt to re-sign him in Peter Angelos (of the Orioles) preferred method...waiting and waiting and waiting...
2. Obviously LeBron is looking to get a ring, not just money...did the Cleveland team make any effort to go out and obtain other high caliber players to supplement LeBron on the roster? I have heard of other free agents going to Miami and other cities, but nothing about someone being courted to go to Cleveland.
I'm not trying to be a dick...I really am interested in knowing...
Turkishjade...I think cities feel that there are also psychological benefits to having pro sports teams their citizens can identify themselves with. It may not reap immediate benefits regarding revenue (except for the local sports bars/restaurants on game days), but having a pro team...especially a successful pro team, is a great marketing tool to attract new businesses and new residents...who then can be taxed to bring in additional revenue.
I am not so sure this actually works, but I have heard this argument made.

"Maybe I spent $200, NJ probably saw $10 of that."
i'd be willing to bet that the giants and jets are getting taxed more than 5%. pro sports are part of the attraction of living in/visiting a certain area. attract more people to your area, the more money that is spent in your area. and, at least during the season, you have very wealthy athletes living in your area, and they are spending money in your area. there's probably many other ways that a sports team benefits a city than that, but you get the idea.
Well, to be honest, I usually wanna leave Cleveland after about an hour of being there so I do have to give kudos to Lebron for staying so long. This was a pretty crappy way for him to go though. And I think it does have a big affect on the economy around here because with Lebron, Cavs basketball was a big draw for the Q, as well as sports bars and other restaurants around here and stores selling Cavs gears, etc. and I think a lot of people around here are going to be turned off of NBA basketball altogether over this. It may seem asinine, and it is really, but people around here are passionate about professional sports because we don't really have much else. Just look what happened when Art Modell move the Browns to Baltimore. Speaking of which, I gotta take the Browns to the Superbowl. Hope the bus doesn't explode before we get there!

It went that way in Boise after the Broncos won the Fiesta Bowl and got national attention. It put our school on the map, more people started going to school here, and business started taking notice, too. You can definitely see a ripple effect with a successful sports team.
And I don't get the Comic Sans hate. It was basically created by Dave Gibbons, and Dave Gibbons is fucking awesome.

Nope, you were right the first time.
Do basketball players really bring that much income to a city?
I dunno about basketball but during the NHL playoffs when Ottawa was still in they said here on the radio that every home playoff game brought in millions of dollars for the city so it definitely is profitable for a city to have good sports teams.
