I know, you're tired of us old folks waxing nostalgic about our childhood games, but c'mon, this kicks ass. (via)

No sir.
If you actually
made it to 8-4 (obviously you haven't)
You would know there is a floating platform over that lava that facilitates that move.

At first I thought, oh not that impressive, they just over-layed the graphics on a video of a wall.
But if that was the case, and they were just shooting a blank wall, how did the video follow Mario with such precision?

only way i can imagine it is that they rigged up something sort of like how the NFL does the line on the field thing... where they have a camera that knows the position of everything and how it moves...
but equally baffling is what software they used to lay the levels all together like that so far ahead of where its actually generated...

Lots of planning and timing, and a skilled camera operator.

I'm going with a simple playback on a separate camcorder, phone, or other portable device.

Yep, or a timer and sheet with notes like 40 seconds = here.

i love being corrected. 20+ years has degraded my memory of a level i played a handful of times.

I think they filmed the gameplay first and then brought a little monitor that had that game footage on it while they were filming the wall. That way, if they played the video of the game while recording the wall, they'd know when to stop moving (at the end of a level) and when to pan down (when Mario goes into a pipe) etc.
That's just my guess. And no matter how they did it it's pretty impressive. I hope all that work gets him a job.
The game is obviously super imposed onto the video. Good Mario skills though.
Old folks?! I played Mario when i was a kid.
That was some mighty fine motion tracking.

Yeah, I don't think that's really in dispute.
I think that probably every concrete wall has a mario game going on, it's just that we can't see it and these guys probably just found a camera lens that allows us to see it and then they filmed this.

Though I would feel bad for the guy if he really did paint, erase, paint, erase, etc. just to have everyone say "cool superimposing job, man.

Thank Christ it's not just me. Woke up feeling rough after a night of beer and undercooked burger, watched that video and thought I'd damaged my eyes.

It's called acid.
I was impressed with the way the shadows on the wall lined up really well with the start of the dungeon level.

Hey now, just the other day I had a doctor I work with (who is also a damn Lawyer) have everyone in the ER watch this video
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QStm3ZyzgY0 and was convinced it was a real machine developed at Iowa State University made from mostly John Deer tractor parts. I didn't have the heart to tell him that it was obviously animated.
I guess I'm making up for it here. You'd think a guy who got his MD and decided it wasn't enough and went back to school for his Law degree would be observant enough to know shitty animation. >.<
animated or not that was still really cool.
When are we going to start seeing more Duck Hunt tributes, damn it? The Mario well is dry, people!

that was much cooler when i thought it was a tiny mural...
then it started moving. eh.
Guess this solves whether or not the goombas still move when Mario is not around... OR DOES IT ??!!?
Glad to hear I'm not the only one that can't handle Vimeo/thinks Vimeo sucks.
You guys are speculating way hilariously about software. Stickers would surely be the easiest solution to make this
I think all the Mario Star Wars Zelda stuff you see online today isn't by old folks reminescing (I was 11 when Empire Strikes Back came out and saw it opening night) but by a slick digital kind of young folks(s) who want to out-80's their own parents by taking stuff in a direction it was never intended (Star Wars burlesque? Really?) or by competing for ownership by strange way of having the most mp3's or memorizing the names of all teh key grips or some such nonsense instead of inventing something new to add to the greater story. This video was well done and bravo good sir. Now contribute to the friggen history of art and make something NEW for Christ sake. We the old folks beg you. I'm begging you. If I'm 50 and the world is still all "Holy Shit a Yoda Cake!" - I dunno.

First, try a wired connection. Second, clean off every piece of crap the manufacturer put on there that you don't need. It only slows your computer down.
