You know, if you're going to send people a roll of chips that don't do shit, why bother putting that much effort into it? Just send them a brick with "lulz" written on it and be done with it.

Because I like to be a debbie downer...

I'd hazard the guess that they were hoping that Sparkfun wouldn't check them. Then they send the slugs out already on the circuit board to consumers, and keep ordering from their "Shady Company Inc." for another two months, or six months, or maybe even a year, or however long it takes for the consumers to troubleshoot what went wrong, go back to Sparkfun and say this is my problem, and then for Sparkfun to track down which shipment all the chips were from. Thus, much larger profits for Shady Company Inc. than one box with a brick marked "lulz."

But hey, what do I know of shady backroom dealings.

Or they could just spam false business names, like many fake-product companies do, every couple weeks or so. Standard quantity over quality tactic.

Not that it matters in the long run.

But surely SparkFun has insurance or some protection! From who exactly? While this may sound like it's horrendous, we actually hold great power. With over 7,000 transactions, we have never been burned. Why? Because with most components and suppliers, there is plenty of competition: if any one supplier causes us pain we simply never use them again and reward the suppliers that treat us well.

No you dont. With only 7000 transactions there's plenty of buyers, if you're such a douche, they'll sell to somebody else.

SparkFun still gay after their promotion fail.

Since the company was formed in 2003, that gives them 1000 transactions a year, or 2.7 a day. Granted, that's probably nothing compared to corporations, but for a small business that's decent. How often do YOU make 3 purchases of electronics components a day?
