I did not! I've been using the same old ass ipod forever and did not know that it supported lossless formats.
Yeah I think the only iPods that don't support Apple Lossless are the first two generations of iPod Shuffles. The most recent generation, the one with the controls on the headphones, does support Apple Lossless.
If you rip a CD with iTunes, all you have to do is go into your iTunes Preferences, and under "Import Settings" just select "Import Using: Apple Lossless." There aren't any encoding options or anything for it, really straightforward. Just keep in mind that an average Apple Lossless track is like 40mb.
If you get all your music online through less legitimate sources
coughbittorrentcough like I do, the most widely used lossless codec is FLAC, which iTunes does not natively support. If you're on a Mac, there's a great free tool called
Fluke that you can use to import the FLAC files into iTunes, where you can then convert them to Apple Lossless for playing on your iPod. I don't know if a similar tool exists on the PC.
