Not to nitpick, but the Haiti earthquake was a 7.0 on the Richter scale, and this is an 8.8, so it's 80 times the energy, if I'm not mistaken. I know an 8.0 is ten times the energy of a 7.0, and a 9.0 would be 100 times the energy of a 7.0, so an 8.8 would be 80 times the energy, right?

Actually, that's not right, because my math would mean an 8.1 is 10 times a 7.0.

New Madrid fault line and I'm just a few miles away from it. According to wiki it may be shutting down but you never know. It fucked some shit up in 1812. Made the Mississippi river flow backwards for a day.

Really? I thought it was the work of a total cunt personally.

Irreverence is one thing, but to trivialise an event in which over 80 people so far have lost their lives with a lame pun is a shitty thing to do.

But hey, who cares? They're just a bunch of foreigners. Right?

Cool. So where was the 'Jenga' headline after September 11th or the 'Katrina and the waves' after New Orleans got hit?

If it happens in America = serious business
If it happens in the rest of the world = teh funny

Another example? The 'classic' tag he gave to footage of the 1985 Bradford fire disaster in which 56 people lost their lives. [Fazed Feb 14 2009].

I don't know why you would even defend shit like this.

maybe it should have been. I think it may have been better for this country if they had taken a more philosophical stance towards those tragedies instead of turning them into political battle flags to be used to advance someone's agenda. Besides, the things that sucked about those incidents is that they were both, to some degree, made worse by our incompetence.

Chile was well prepared for an earthquake. It sucks that it happened, but their country will be fine. More jokes of questionable taste please!

Classic can, and is, used in multiple ways. When something is reposted, it's Classic. When something is old/historic, it's Classic. When something is "Hah! That's classic!", it's Classic.

This headline choice has nothing to do with the fact that this happened outside of the US. It has everything to do with the fact that I play with words for a living and that was the first thing that popped into my head. Had I posted the New Orleans link, Katrina and the Waves might have been good, but personally, I probably would have opted for Bourbon (and Water) Street. I'm not too sure about Jenga, though. There's only one tower of blocks there, so it wouldn't quite fit. My headlines don't mean that I don't feel for the people and appreciate the tragedy. And before you get upset, I used the definition of "appreciate" that means "understand the scope of" not the one that means "am thankful for".

If you can't take the fact that sometimes you have to laugh at something so you can deal with the horror of it and if you want to insist on SRS BSNS with your news and headlines, you should probably stick with CNN or The Wall Street Journal.

Next thing you know, you'll be complaining that we're not giving enough respect to something because of the links that are posted before or after it or the fact that we posted something after it too quickly so that it doesn't get the obligatory "moment of silence".

In the deep water they can travel incredibly fast but have very little vertical displacement. As the water gets shallower near the shore they slow down but rise up.
