That was really cool.

Really interesting to see what normal life looks like through this perspective.

Those night shot TS were particularly neat looking with the longer exposure.

The helicopter scene with people looks incredible.

I also like the wind on the water moving the silt around. nice touch.

So, could someone use an opposite effect/tech/whatever and make miniatures look completely full-sized? Just think of all the [good] Godzilla movies we could have!

Can someone explain to me why this works? Not how the camera is set up, but why this perspective makes it look like miniatures to humans? Is it a combination of the framerate and the blur on the outside or something?

It's a blur on both the top and bottom which fools you eye into thinking you are farther away from the focal point.

The shots with people so close that you can clearly define them kinda ruined the perspective a bit. Further away it worked really well and yes, the night shots were particularly cool.

I was just overcome with a feeling of how tiny we all are. Just busy tiny little creatures with our little ant hives and any jobs and ant machines. Hurrying back and forth in our tiny little ant flying ships.

Kinda depressing looking at it that way really.

Yes, it is real. It's stop-motion photography using a tool called a tilt-shift lens. If you want to see some really great work, watch the videos created by this guy:

The audio was jerky though, so I muted it and played some Santana and it matched well.

That's crazy how much that blur does... if you take two pieces of paper and cover up the top and bottom to just show the unblurred middle part then it just looks normal (although sped up)

I think it's fooling your brain into thinking you're much closer to small things. It's because we're used to seeing shallow depth of field when things are closer. When you're far away, more distance is in focus. So the weird mix of both shallow depth of field and being far away makes it just look like you're close to miniature things.

It's a fairly specific effect; once you've seen it, you've seen it. I think the trick now is going to be in finding a way of using it in an unexpected way. I'm totally working on that right now.
