A sun dog is a prismatic bright spot in the sky caused by sun shining through ice crystals. The Atlas V rocket exceeded the speed of sound in this layer of ice crystals, making the shock wave visible from the ground.

We pay millions of taxpayer dollars so some idion balancing a Handycam on grandpa's dick can try to shoot a video to put on the internet which wastes two fucking minutes to get to the goddamn sonic boom?
I'm tired.
I was ready to type a comment about bad camera panning...
...but then I saw the sonic boom ripples, and all was well.
I second Zoidberg.
This is wonderful in the truest sense of the word.
P.S. Fazed has been in fine form the last couple days, keep it up! :)

Beautiful. I already watched it 3 times before it said we can watch it again. So I did. Twice.

I have always wondered...what if ants evolved enough to have the same technological capacity. Imagine how freaking cool it would be to see an ant space shuttle launch.

I fear ants. If any species were going to take over the planet, I think it would be them.

They are the Nazis of the animal kingdom.
On topic: Was the launch specifically to demonstrate this phenomenon? Because they seemed to know it was going to happen.

They always have a little play-by-play at the various launches. Most of them don't have such a spectacular pulse wave like this one did, however. The two rocket launches I've seen were pretty "standard" if you can say such a thing. The roar of those engines was, for me, far more amazing than anything else I was witnessing. It's hard to explain how loud they are from as far away as the viewing area is.
Science!
Awesome. I realise it's a silly question now, there are hundreds of reasons to launch a rocket.

Where do you think they all went? Duh they launched their asses out of the solar system. The SCIENCE! is there. Check it out.

They were taller then houses and ate things the size of sofas
I keep trying with this footstool but I could never hope to be that awesome
That was sick.
Anyone got a link to some still pictures of that?

Reminds me of the song Chain Lightning by Rush... how cool it would have been to be there and experience that live with a group of friends. If it hadn't been caught on film, it would be hard to explain the badassness of it all.

so I'm really bad at sciencing math but it was just the ice crystals that made the sonic wave visible? if there were ice crystals all around bullets would really look like in the matrix?

No, you couldn't dodge them. Wait...try it and get back to me on that.

Not a sonic boom. A sonic boom would look like a single thick wave. That's the turbulence caused by the engine. But still awesome.

In this situation, I believe it's easier to say it's a sonic boom rather than a super-sonic object passing through a semi-liquid layer floating in the sky. Sun Dogs are fascinating illusions, and rockets kick ass. Yay, science!
