Am I missing something here? Does the Australian government own the patent to 802.11? Why is all that cash going to 'worthy causes'?
That's cool how you can patent a standard. Makes a lot of sense.

Worse than that there are codes (fire codes and building codes) which are copyrighted by have the force of law.
It's good work if you can get it, owning the law.
Intellectual property is a joke.

NFPA stands for No Free Publications Allowed.
CSIRO's annual report, released earlier this month, reveals the agency has reaped $200m from a long but ultimately successful court battle with 14 of the world's biggest technology companies.
So what, each company spent about $10 million to get them to fuck off?
Big whoop, each of those companies spend about that much each year in catering and parking alone. They probably laughed themselves to death when those fucktarded Aussies showed up asking for that
little.
Do those stupid wombat-fuckers realize how much
each of those companies make in one financial quarter off their invention?

Five paragraphs in and I have no idea what this thing is talking about.
Done.
CSIRO an australian government agency spent lots of money on R&D'ing 802.11 technologies, they came up with some hardware with really revolutionized wireless data transmission, they offered it to lots of companies to license, they tried to weasel out of paying them money after implementing said hardware.
If you notice Cisco isn't listed as one of the companies who paid up because they already have a license and are paying royalties.

See, that's what I was thinking...not so much about the relatively small settlement amount, this is REALLY about the fact that now ALL of those manufacturers are going to be paying royalties to the Aussies for the foreseeable future, until someone comes up with something better...
And i don't think that's really comin down the pipe any time soon, really. WiFi seems to be a pretty prevalent technology, so they stand to make some decent residual income out of this deal.

Patents don't live forever though... In the USA they are 20 years (pretty sure).
Assuming they developed the technology 15 years ago then they only have another 5 years left. My guess is they are looking for a lower amount to get SOMEthing while they still can.
I think it's important to realize how big of a role this patent has played in wireless technology. Before this research was done, wireless transfer rates were languishing around the same speed as modems, but this research increased that speed over a hundred times, essentially overnight. Without it, broadband would be useless if you were using wireless.
Furthermore, I think it's perfectly fine for a government organization to collect fees. If my tax dollars are paying for research, and the government just gives that research away to companies that then make a profit off of it, I think that's a problem.

Being smart enough to invent the tech in the first place, these guys also take on multi-billion dollar companies in small groups, make them acknowledge that the Aussies invented it, win court cases in american courts and ensure royalties.
Next time you buy something that uses wi-fi, winner of fail, I hope you get the same warm feeling I do, knowing that some of that money is coming down under to help fund the next bunch of wombat-fuckers and their awesome ideas.

a) they didn't invent the tech, they improved on it
2) name any other major technology to come out of the land down under.
on the other hand, who gives a fuck. ideas are universal. you came up with it, he came up with it, she came up with it, i came up with it, they came up with it, nobody gives a fuck. it exists now. we can all use it. our lives are better not because some guy came up with it; our lives are better because the idea exists. it's a part of the universe now. there will never be a time now where the idea of wi-fi doesn't exist. you could kill every member of the team that developed 802.11, and it wouldn't matter one bit.

I already conceded the point. But I do find it funny that you can fit all the major inventions on one page. Doing so with inventions of the US or Japan or Germany or England would be sort of ridiculous.

Because, as we all know, web pages are of a standard length.

To further put it in perspective, all of Australia only has a population of 22 million (New York City has over 8 million alone) and only 200 years of western civilisation. On a per capita basis, we're also world leaders in sports, medicine and agriculture.
