I'm fine with banning hands-free, too, as a matter of fact.

We can ban hands-free, but it's impossible to enforce.
At most it'll be one of those charges that get tacked on after you've commited some other moving violation.

Once we're on the topic of highway safety, there's one thing that always annoyed me.
Let's say the limit is 65, but a cop clocks you at 66. Of course you won't get a ticket.
You probably won't get one unless he catches you going about 75, or 80, or some other number depending on the location, that particular cop, his mood, etc.
But I hate that guessing game. When the limit says 55, does that mean I can go 75? Or will I get busted?
I propose we raise every speed limit by 5-10 mph. And if you get clocked going even 1 mph above the limit, you get a ticket. No more guesswork - you know how fast you're allowed to go, and you can drive accordingly.
Is that cool with everyone?

I dont care. Id rather you not. People's ability to handle shit while driving varies wildly with the individual, and I think cops should have a certain amount of room to make a judgment. I also look at the road like Mad Max anyway, and I dont think safety legislation does much.

I totally missed this post.
I can't be specific because I read about it a while ago. From what I recall, Europe is swinging.
Germany is the only example I can think of, off the top of my head, where the right now controls the gov't.

But the bigger trend is that far-right parties are winning seats in the European Parliment.
And in Europe, far-right means any combination of openly racist, fascist, anti-immigrant, white supremicist,
anti-gypsy (hello eastern europe), etc. The kind of people who'd never get a seat at the table in the USA.

Now you answer? Now I'm drunk?
I had this whole essay thought out in my head, where I finely pointed out that the Christian conservative movement in Europe is oddly immune to anything that happens at all, while the social democrats have been loosing ground to populist parties for well over a decade, far before the economic crisis, as shown for example in the French presidential election in 2002 for instance, because they lost touch with the concerns of their working class electorate, so what you are seeing now is on the one hand a consolidation of conservative power coupled with the rise of more extremist parties which has more to do with economic pressures of low wage countries gaining access to the EU and economic migrants with an Islamic background from the second half of the last century establishing a more permanent presence, while the current economic crisis is seen mostly as a problem caused by short sighted American deregulation and the financial wannabes in Europe who could not say no to the fast money, but I am afraid that if I start to type this out now it will all be lost in a long winding incoherent sentence that would run on for a paragraph.
So it will have to be tomorrow.

and I don't think safety legislation does much.

I used to think the same thing. I was against seat belt laws and still don't really like the idea of them BUT I see people nearly everyday that would be dead if it wasn't for two things, wearing their seat belt and driving a late model car that was manufactured under stronger safety standards.

I can't tell you how many times I have pulled up on an accident scene looked at the officer in the front seat with me and said someones dead in this one only to find them sitting on the side of the road with minor injuries. 10 - 15 years ago those same people would have been dead.

It's a personal struggle for me to admit that the seat belt laws made a difference but the proof is there for me everyday I go to work.

Madison took notes on the Constitutional Convention.

Madison's Notes were not published until about 1840, perhaps to fulfill
an early decision by the original convention forbidding disclosure of
the proceedings, to which Madison may have felt himself bound while the
other participants lived, and it was after all the rest of them had died
that he did finally publish them.

The reason the notes where not publish until the writers were dead was that the Constitution was a betrayal to the writers' class, the landed gentry.
They were giving more power to the masses.
