I played back in '96, dunno what they did with the games after that. Last time I played D&D was 2001 or so. Played a bit with the DC Comics RPG that my brother ran, mostly played a NPC off and on...didn't really grasp the game. Had fun turning the PCs into Care Bears, tho.

Hack and slash is my favourite thing to do! My favourite character so far has been a half-orc barbarian who was terrified of water. The party had to get to an island and they ended up knocking her out magically to get her over there. Once there, she wanted to know what happened. The party said they found another land only route to get to the island. Man she was dumb. But she was so fun!

She also had enormous cleavage peeking out.

Started playing Dnd about 2 years ago, got more interested in it when a bunch of my friends in residence started playing. Im in a campaign now, but we dont get the chance to play much due to conflicting schedules.

Though the campaigns i play in have always been good, for some reason or another we've always had to rescue a party member from jail, usually resulting in significant collateral damage to the town.

also to be letting me know if we get an online thing going,
My fav chars were my wild mage who managed to toast the party half the time and the DM had great delight in giving a deck of many things (my dice rolls tended to suck)
and my schizophrenic Neutral good Grey Gnome Cleric with MPD, At cedrtain dice rolls he would think he was a chaotic evil Duegar(sp) Cleric.

The hardest thing about playing is finding 3 or 4 people who have a close to the same viewpoint on gaming as you do. As I can judge, there are at least 3 or 4 gamer archetypes who have already spoken up on the thread : The old veteran who sticks to his system, the gamer-curious, the power gamer and the gamer chick. All of these are fine, but everyone plays differently.

I am not saying that these people can't all be in a group - but the "I-gotta-weave-myself-deeply-into-the-story-with-a-three-page-character-bac kground-bard-playing-guy" will start to clash with the "Hack'n'slash-Kill-em-all" guy if the DM doesnt stay on his toes. It's harder work than ya think.

That reminds me of something else - Talk to anyone who has ever played D&D and they will regale you with (usually) bizarre - but significant memories they had from their gaming days. All of these people are gaming, sharing times with close friends and really forging memories.

My playgroup agrees we would have as much fun playing D&D as we would Chutes and Ladders - It's not so much the system but all the good people sharing that experience with you.

One of the pipefitters out where I work played in a campaign I DMed in '96, I bumped into him one day and he started reminicing about what happened. His helper (who had to be 40+) cuts him off with: "I've heard this story four times already..."

After playing 3E when it came out until I moved up to Seattle the first game I found was GURPS 4th. I had fun playing and have played in a few groups. I ran a d20 Modern game for about six months before I started working overnights. Now that I finally have a group to play with I realize that all but one of them were used to running games before they started as a group.

If you guys like D&D, check out Exalted. It's by White Wolf (for those who don't recognize the company, they made Vampire: The Masquerade, and Vampire: The Requiem). Unlike D&D, there is a solid, overarching story that makes more than an ounce of sense, and the system's better to boot.

It's fun to get a big crowd sometimes, as long as people are lenient and fun to play with and aren't trying to always be in the spotlight (I have one of those in my group. It gets annoying).
I am sure they will put you in as 3rd level, if everyone else is at that point. I have never heard of a DM making someone who is new start at 1st.

Yeah, it is his job, but there is a lot of story that is already there for your use, instead of "you see a bunch of goblins, what do you do?" being the commonplace, there is a tendency for some political intrigue. The game is also more over-the-top than D&D; you're a true hero, and a demi-god. The game is a lot more interesting than D&D, which I consider to be the gateway game, because of its reputation (to parody all of those high school health classes).

I also think that the system is set up in a more logical manner. In D&D, the system is far too abstracted - why is an 18 a +4 bonus? what does that really mean? and those 13s that you always roll when making a character, while your one friend rolls up that 16, 16, 17, 17, 18, 18 character, how is it really balanced? In Exalted, you get points to spread across in a standard way, and you start on superhuman scale,

In D&D, you have a 1 in 20 chance of critical failure every time you attack, no matter how good you are with a sword. Does that just not bother anyone else? In Exalted, that problem has already been addressed, if you get no successes on your d10 roll, and get a 1, then you get a "botch" or critical failure. The more exp you put into a skill, the less likely you are to get a botch, according to basic statistics.

Last thing: The magic system is better, and there are more minor magic powers that everyone uses that are called "charms," and it makes the game more interesting. Try it out, seriously, I've played all sorts of games (D&D 2nd/3rd/3.5, Shadowrun, Star Wars West End/D20 versions, Feng Shui, Vampire: The Masquerade and Requiem, Werewolf: The Apocalypse, Mage: The Ascension, Orpheus, Rifts... a lot of games, I just can't remember them all) and I am a seasoned player of 9 years. I really think that this game is good, and that you should all give it a shot.

When I start a new campaign I usually have everyone roll a d3 or d4 for level so that the characters have a wider variance of capabilities and experience. It may seem unfair to some but I think it's better for inter-player dynamics.

It makes it more diverse and "realistic" to me. Not everyone in any adventure is completely even. It takes away from the "realism."

I know how ridiculous that sounds, so don't bother! :)

I also think that the system is set up in a more logical manner.

Point buy takes care of that. All characters start 'even.'

d20 is a simple system, the role playing is what you make of it. It isn't a campaign world, which WW offers in its games. I have always avoided the WW games, I have many friends who are really into them, and their lines of complaint are longer than those for d20.

Currently the only game which hold my interest is Burning Wheel. It is scalable, if you want a campaign of children or superheroes you can do it. It is PURELY player driven. The players and gamemaster collectively decide the direction of the campaign world and their characters' place within and it is up to the characters to paint the picture, the GM just hands out the paint. There is no campaign world so to speak, though the game is designed to be a high-fantasy one. Character advancement is based on the characters using their skills/stats, not any kind of points or levels. More importantly is player's use of his character's Beliefs/Traits/Instincts to drive his action within the game.

It is the only game in my over a dozen years that I've play was is truly a player driven game, nothing else is comparable.
