I took them 11 years ago when I started and retook some two years ago in my college.

I thought I had most things down and that I was really good.. and people told me I was really good.

The guy made me look like a 4 year old. He completely destroyed me in every fashion so I defineltly do suggest lessons from someone who you know is DAMN GOOD.

yeah i took lessons for 2 years now. i can play quite a bit better and have a much deeper understanding of the actual theory than one of my friends who didn't. and he's been playing for nearly twice as long as me. So lessons = good if you find someone that is good. check your local guitar shops, try a lesson or two and see what the guy has to offer. if you don't like him, try someone else.

I owned a guitar without knowing how to play for a while until I enrolled in a beginner class along with other college courses. Soon my studying took a far backseat to my playing/practicing, and I was on to the intermediate course. That was the extent of my lessons, and I'd like to one day take it further, but it definitely helped me immensely.

So I don't really listen to older music like 70's and 80's...

But I do realize that that is the type of music that's fun to play on guitar.

Anyone got suggestions for their favorite older songs that aren't impossible to play right away?

Well I'm not bad by any means at all. I'm 22 and have been playing for 11 years so I'm really good.

I jsut don't liek songs that you have to memorize a solo for a week.

Or maybe something cool acousitically that's easy to sing to.

Social Distortion. Simple to play and sing, and some of them translate well acoustically. I recommend starting with their self-titled third-ish album.
See also: Pixies. I prefer Doolittle and Come On Pilgrim.
For slightly older stuff, you really can't go wrong with Sabbath and Ramones.
For slightly twangier stuff, Steve Earle, especially Johnny Come Lately and Copperhead Road.
For slightly lower-voiced stuff, Johnny Cash of course, and Leonard Cohen.
Most of the Doors is pretty accessible as well, and is always a crowd-pleaser.

Smells like teen spirit.... ehhh.
Maybe it's because it was the first song that my first band learned to play all the way through back in the day. After a year of incorporating that into our practice sessions and 11.5 shows (Our first show was a talent show, hence the .5) we grew might tired of it.
Also, at that talent show, we were going to play SLTS as our second song but my A string broke. Yeah. Turns out when I put new strings on, the old ones left some burrs on the bridge. So I kind of hate that song now.

I always enjoy those kinds of lists, whether or not I fully agree with them or their ordering. There's also other solos and such I really like that will never make a list like that. Prime example: Fuel - Sunburn. It has one of those solos that I can really feel every time I hear it.

I'm not too much of a guitarist, but I record a lot. From my experience:

Line 6 is okay. Like someone said, it takes a lot of tweaking to get the right sound. It depends on the amp. Vetta II's are alright, but I'm not really into the whole digital/solid-state sound of the Spider's.
Marshall JCM 800 is great for recording. All around good sound.
I've recorded Mesa Dual and Triple Rec's. I prefer to the Dual. Great for metal or whatever.
Roadkings rock, too.
Peavey 5150 is great for heavy stuff.
Bogner Extacy and Uberschall sound great.
The best head I've ever heard is a Hughes and Kettner TriAmp MKII. That thing is a beast.
Matchless amps are probably the second best amps I've ever heard.
Soldano is over-rated IMO
Orange amps are good for clean, bluesy, or light rock. Their cabs sound amazing with any head, though.
Vox amps are awesome, too.
I hate the sound of Fender amps for some reason. Cyber Twin is okay, though.

As far as acoustics go:

I found this and thought it was cool. 10? string guitar?
And then theres this...

Well anyways I'm a Behringer fan and I'm also an Iceman fan. I have one an a half icemen. IC400 and the ICX120 (I consider the ICX half an iceman due to its lack of a hook and smaller body).

My main amp is a combo. The GX212. The built in distortion sucks so I use pedals.

I want to build an acoustic iceman one of these days since I've been mostly playing on my acoustic electric lately.

I like my gear old and quirky. Back in New Zealand I have a collection of old guitars & basses, probably Japanese-made from the 70s. My faves are a Kawai Mosrite copy and a Pearl Gibson Studio bass copy.
Amps, my faves from my collection are my modified Holden Wasp: an NZ-made valve beast, an Abbey: another NZ-made valve beast with a very gorgeous tremelo, and a Roland Cube. So tiny and yet SO loud! Rocking a Behringer slanted quad.

Yeah same here, I just got a regular fender squire strat and a pretty cheap-o acoustic.

But I also love meeting poeple who "play" and have nice stuff, then I shred it up, say "pretty nice" and hand them their guitar.

I have one of these, in red. I lowered the action a lot, and put really twangy light strings on, gives a soft but clear-ish sound, if that makes sense.

I have an electric too, but I really enjoy playing acoustic a lot lot more.
