It's about time we have a real general firearm thread around here.
This is the thread where you can discuss/ask questions about/show off firearms.
I'll start us off.
I've been shooting for a bit over a year. I've fired quite a few different guns, from a North American Arms .22 mini-revolver to a Shilo Sharps rifle chambered in 45-70. I've fired guns made in the 1870's, maybe even older. Most of the more exotic guns I've fired belong to my dads friend, who has a ridiculous amount of guns and is quite generous with ammunition since he reloads in probably around 15 calibers :)
Ever since I started shooting, my dad and I have acquired 9 firearms (6 pistols, 3 rifles) and we have another pistol on the way. We currently reload 4 calibers and have 2 presses, a Lee turret press and a Dillon 550 progressive press.
My dad and I started shooting because he had some extra money lying around ever since he stopped drinking. The money he's saving by not going to bars (Along with a bunch of extra overtime. But he was spending a retarded amount of money at bars) is enough to fund out gun habit.
Here's an outdated pic of the family.
The top rifle is a model 1969 romanian trainer (.22 bolt action)
The rifle under that is a Ruger 10/22 (.22 semi-automatic)
The pistol on the left of the top row is a Ruger GP100 (.357 / .38 Revolver)
The pistol in the middle of the top row is a Springfield XD-40 tactical (.40 semi-auto)
The pistol on the right of the top row is a Smith and Wesson 22A1 (.22 semi-auto)
The pistol on the left of the bottom row is a Springfield 1911 (.45 semi-auto)
The pistol on the right of the bottom row is a Ruger P97 (.45 semi-auto)
This is our Colt Commander, purchased a little while after the group picture was taken. (.45 semi-auto)
Here's the Ruger Police Carbine .40 (PC4) we just picked up today. (.40 semi-auto)
PS: If the other thread qualifies as the official firearm thread I wont mind if this gets locked. However if this thread gets locked could somebody change the name of the other thread to something a bit more general? It'd feel a bit more welcoming to those of us that aren't asking for advice about handguns :)

and a friend of mine went there and bought a 9mm pistol without id, check, or anything
hes expecting the forms in the mail in 3-4 weeks
it made me scared and nervous. i fuckin hate guns.

I fired Donald Trump (the nickname for my .45).
As a former Marine, the M-16 will always be my favorite.
Accurate from 500 yards with no scope.

I hear people say stuff like that about certain rifled very often, but I just cant understand how it would work. Personally, I dont think I'd be able to even see a person very well at 500 yards without a scope, let alone be able to hit them. I've never fired at a range of more than 100 yards though. I could probably keep my shots on a human sized target at 100 yards with iron sights, but at 500 yards? I dont think there's any way in hell that I'd be able to do that.

How'd you know I was in the market for a safe?
I already have a safe that's big enough for my pistols, but I dont have one for the long guns yet (Should be getting one in a couple weeks though). The rifles are currently in my closet and the pistols are in the safe. Except for my GP100 and PC4 (Home defense lineup), which are easily accessible to me yet out of sight, along with a speed loader of .357 and a magazine of .40. I'd rather be able to get to them and not need them, rather then need them and not be able to get to them.
i was robbed at gunpoint when i was 14-15, in burbank on my way home from school to sherman oaks. i just threw my whole wallet at him & ran the fuck away. i wasnt gonna die for no fuckin $6.

What school was that? Bell-Jeff HS, Providence HS, or Burbank HS?
Burbank all in all, is a nice community, even though it has an airport.
burbank hs. the lockers were outside in the weather. OUTSIDE. nothin but a buncha weirdo freaks in that fuckhole city.

I hear ya', man.
But every Marine has to qualify from 500 hundred yards with iron scopes.
We shoot a normal human sized target from the prone position.
I don't know how I did it, but I did.
Who robs a 15 yr old at gunpoint? Like you have a real job at that age that lines your pockets so well you're a walking Brinks truck.
I love videos/stories of robbers getting p0wned. Especially when they rob ppl with fake guns and then the person finds out. Or grannies that shoot the shit out of intruders with a .357
I don't really have much in the inventory of guns. I have a .22 semi auto rifle and a 20 guage NE Firearms shotty that I get deer with, that's it. I'd like a handgun some time in the future and maybe a 30-06 for range shooting.
It rox to live in the country. All my neighbors shoot all the time so it's nothing to a hear BOOM every once in a while.

I went to Bell Jeff class of '91, Burbank has its good and bad spots, I go to the firing range there near Costco.

Goddamn, that's fucked up.
You did the right thing though. Regardless of how fucked up it is to pull a gun on and rob on a 14-15 year old (Or anyone, for that matter. Fucking criminals...), there's not much you could have done aside from what you did or get shot. It's better to give up a few bucks and walk away than get shot and have the guy rip your wallet off of your dead body.
I need a m1911 but i'm tooo porr to afrod it.

I dont really have a problem with guns, but owning an arsenal seems, well, obsessive.
Living in condos, if you want a gun for home defense, get a shot gun. less likely to waste a neighbor when firing in the dark, scared, 3 seconds after being awaked in the night.

It's like any other collection of functional items. Each one has a purpose and a niche in the collection.
Obsessive? Perhaps. Awesome? Of course.

I was watching a 70's cop movie earlier this week. It occured to me that EVERYBODY in the movie with a gun had a .38 snub nose. Bad guys, coppers, and all. I know veyr little about guns, I hope to get something for self defense once I'm old enough to get a pistol.
.38 is good for concealed carry because of the size, but it kind of lacks stopping power. It seems to be a favorite with women because of the small amount of recoil and the physical size of the piece.
I guess in most situations, the very appearance of it and the possibility of being shot is enough to stop most would-be criminals, but if you ever run into a cracked-out body-builder, you're probably screwed.

I had no plans for concealed carry. Even if I wanted to my wife wouldn't let me, just want something to keep at home for that "just in case."

the simple shotgun is the best for home defense.
A load of birdshot is more than enough to ruin someones day, and wont penetrate the walls the way most other bullets would, lower chance of friendly fire.
a cracked-out body-builder
50 cent?
Why is it that handguns cost so much more than long-barrels, but are made of less material?
I'm afraid of guns in the same way that I'm afraid of heights.
My mind keeps thinking "well, what if you just pointed it at yourself and pulled the trigger, such a simple thing" in the same way that being on top of a high building makes me think "well, it would be so simple to walk off. What then?"
I suppose I have no place in this thread!

You're right, you're right.
It was pretty easy. I think I was just trying to make the guy not feel so bad.
My bad.

Sounds like secret marine HAX!
I guess I dont really have any real referance of how far 500 yards really is. I'd just imagine that a human sized target would look really tiny at that range :)
It does.
You just focus on that front sight, and the target is a little blur.
But we can hit it.

What do you have to do to get sniper/sharpshooter qualification?
Well, to be a sniper, you have to qualify high enough on the range, then go to Scout Sniper School. My dad did that.
But all Marines have to qualify on the range.
Marksman is the lowest. Then Sharpshooter, and Expert is the highest.

If I remember correctly, in boot camp you have to shoot from 200, 300, and 500 yards.
From standing, kneeling, and prone positions.
Rapid fire from 200 and 300. Among other things.
I think it was ten shots from prone position from 500.

After that, you still have to qualify shooting rapid moving targets, night firing, firing with a gas mask on, etc...
All sorts of fun stuff.

Man, you Marines must be some badass shots.
I need to get a nice rifle capable of long ranges, find somewhere that I can shoot at long ranges and go practice.
Unfortunately the ranges around here only go out to about 25 yards. The closest range with a good distance (It goes out to 700 yards) is about an hour away or so.
:(

its all about stance, breath contol, sighting, target id and trigger pull.
and practice, tons of practice
and practice, tons of practice
I love shooting moving targets. Claybirds are my favorite. I can go through four boxes of birds and a brick of shells in no time.

i know i could hit teh 300m targets at basic better than 75% of the time with the iron sights on my M-16A2. Best designed sights in the world.
(And i can wait to finish my custom AR-15 in the next few weeks. I'm looking to greatly improve upon my earlier marks with this new rifle)

75%? Army? j/k

I've been debating for a long time about purchasing one. I know I will eventually. I just miss it too much.

Concealment? Because they're used in more crimes so they want to discourage their use?

Well first off I'd point out that handguns don't usually cost more than rifles in my experience. Some pistols certainly cost more than some rifles, but I wouldn't say it's that common.
Your average non-rare/specialty/show pistols made by reputable manufacturers will generally cost you somewhere between $400-$1000, and average rifle from about $500-$3000.
That said, pistols are harder to make in some ways so they should be a little more expensive proportionately. Generally they have more moving parts, are more miniaturized, use "specialty" metals more often, and require more complex machining. The design and testing phases are also much more involved for a pistol generally so that adds to the cost as well.
2 of my favorite toys . Both are shot weekly, and I reload for both.
Isn't it much harder to legally obtain a handgun than a rifle?
Very.

Depends on where you live. It's not that much harder in WA.
