DeMaxx and Hihosilver are retired.
Ah. That makes sense. If I was retired I'd have a bigger bike and ride the shit out of it.
I got the bike but I still have to jump through hoops here at Ford.

retired yes but i was still putting on lots of miles when working, I ride in the heat cold rain I may not like to but once your on the road you gotta keep going!!
Well I'll ride home in the rain but not to work in the rain. Maybe once I get a rain suit, but not till then. I work in an office and I can't really come in soaked.
I rarely ride to/from work. Something about riding to work in nice clothes at 6 something in the morning just isn't super appealing to me.
Most of the rest of the time I ride in the summer though. Since the middle of August I have only put ... maybe 1500 miles on my car and 500 of that would have been related to a wedding two weekends back.

I worked in a power plant and started at 6am and had a locker, also commuted for years on my bicycle and would ride from 25 degrees to 133( once but never again) but if it was raining in the morning the car got used, you just get into it once you start
Good ride tonight....
San wasn't hurting.
San wasn't hurting.
Got some chrome polish and wax and leather polish today, as well as some brake cleaner and cleaned the hell out of my old sportster.
I'm a bit tired of all these guys with newer harleys looking better than me. Shined it up real nice.

A big part of it is that I don't really like riding while wearing dress clothes. It averages out to something like 75% of the month I wear a tie and dress slacks etc to work. No locker or anything and frankly, thats just not what I want to ride in.
The weather is getting worse again here in MN. No snow predicted but rain for most of the 10day. Fall is starting to wind down here I think.

THere is a strange part of me that enjoys cleaning up the bike.

Only in your post-pubescent mind, Nick...;)
Just getting a head start on turning into a dirty old man Scott ;)
I was hoping the weather was going to be better this weekend since the hunting trip got canned. All well, maybe one day it will be nice enough.

the hunting trip
Expound, please.
What would you like to know?
Got a buddy who owns some land up near Itasca, MN, the headwaters of the Mississippi. We were supposed to leave Friday to go duck hunting and that feel through due to outside commitments.

Yep. 2nd straight year that it has fallen through.
I had a nice 650 mile weekend, palm springs(90+ degrees) one night and la jolla( san diego) and a cool 70 degrees and back home to az @ 90+ degrees
ok bikey people.
I went to a party on the weekend, and this guy had the best looking bike i have ever seen (in that genre). It was a harley, he said it was drag-bike inspired. relatively new ( i think a couple of years). Long, low, big v-twin(i think?) engine, gigantic rear tyre, all black with red stripe on the sidewalls, and maybe a little tiny bit of red trim on the seat, I can't remember. I think even the frame tubes etc were matte black.
What was it? I need to know so I can look at pictures on the internet, wish i had enough money, maybe set a desktop background, then forget about it in a few months. V-rod or something? A special edition?
This is in Australia, but the guy was from Montana, if that means anything.

the all black sounds like a sportster-nightster, but theyre neither low nor long.
Maybe a night rod?

That is a sexy machine.
I think its too much.
It reminds me of like the Batmobile.

Sounds right to me. Those are sharp bikes.

How about The Mild Ones.
Inderstand that I have small children so I have seen my fair share of Spongebob Squarepants cartoons. In one episode this biker gang comes roaring through town as Spongebob is crossing the street. SB grabs a hold of one of the bikers jacket and rips off what he thinks is a W. They yell at him as the continue on that they'll be back. SB is terrified that the Wild Ones are going to come back and kill him and causes much panic in Bikini Bottom. When they do come back it turns out that they are all old geezers (some of using walkers) and the W is actually an M for the Mild Ones. Way too much info I know, but it was really a funny episode and fits you grey hairs perfectly. HAHAHAHA
not grey hair white or as a friend puts it chrome
Touche. HAHAHA
Hey 2 shoes, maybe he made his bike the hard way. That is, it's one of a kind.
I'm very proud of the fact that you can't buy a bike like mine anywhere, right down to the rattle can paint.
haha

WANT
I would sell my sportster AND my zzr1200 to pick up this shov. Can I buy it and THEN sell the bikes? Please?

grmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm...................:)
i think it was a night rod...i love it and want it's babies...or use it to get women to make babies with.
Aggrop, what about that makes it so desirable?
It looks like a nice bike, but I'm ignorant of why it'd be worth coughing up your current two bikes.

Calvin, it has a lot of negatives. It's a big heavy bike that probably leaks oil, is a 4 speed, possibly kick only, probably underpowered, etc.
It's just that it's a shovel, and I love the old FLH style... it's a classic H-D. The sound, the style, the torque, it's just a *mean* bike.
Hard to describe, I guess.

That's a good enough explanation for me. :-)
I'm just enough of a noob with bikes in general that I wouldn't really know what I wanted, or what appeals to me,
whether it's quantifiable aspects of it, or a particular look/sound/feeling.

Whatever moves you in more then a physical sense... Although that part is important too.
This is a very interesting subject I have been attempting to quantify for years.
I have owned a Yamaha YSR50, a 79 Yamaha 100 dirtbike, a 79 Honda CX500, a Honda CBR600, a KTM LC4 620 dual sport, a Kawi Police 1000, A Kawi ZZR1200, and an H-D 1200+ sporty.
Each has it's ups and downs, it's strengths and weaknesses, but the H-D is the only one I truly, truly love. It's weird, the feel, the look, the sound, i swear it even smells different than my other bikes.
I could get on the zzr and ride 180 mph, or ride all day with no wind bugging me, no problems, or i could get on my HD and battle the wind (16 inch ape hangers) and sick at 60 mph. Why would i pick a seemingly inferior bike? Why pick a bike where I carry a tool kit for gosh sake?
Is it because I built so much of it with my own 3 hands? Is it because it's so freakin loud? Is it the lack of front fender (that's tuff in the rain! Try it)? I don't know.
It's like the bike has *soul*. I can feel it moving me, physically and more, like Farnaby said. It's an amazing thing such an imperfect bike has led me appreciate it so much. Partly because my bobber is like that (it needs constant attention, not repairs, and it's really reliable, but rattles stuff loose and everything) I am attracted to older H-Ds... I'm not afraid to wrench 'em so I'm not worried about something like a shovel.
Anyway, what's my point? I guess I can't even explain to myself what it is I like so much about my H-D in particular. Although I love all bikes, I'm a chopper and bobber guy. Whatever. /rambling over

.......I can't even explain to myself what it is I like.........
It's everything you mentioned above, and so much more.
Some things need no solving or explanation.
I've had every brand of scoot out there, with the exception of a B.M.W.
I've ridden one, and it didn't have that 'feeling'. Sure, it was as smooth as silk, but something was missing.
And in the end, when God calls me home, I'll be on a Harley...
Yeah, I know it needs no explanation. But when ya do like what I did and post a link to a 5500$ shovel that's prolly 30 years old and full of leaks, i guess I start thinking about *why*.
It's impossible to describe.
(that KTM was kinda like it though, a 620 single cyl kickstart only sure gives you the feeling it would punch you in the teeth if it had fists)
Yep, I'll be a HD owner for life.
(Although I reserve the right to own multiple bikes at any time of any brand!)

It just "is".
having a bike is something you either get or you don't. I know a lot of my friends think its cool that I own a bike or whatever, but they don't have any desire to get one. Thats fine, I would rather they don't ride if they aren't genuinely interested in riding. Then I have a friend who bought back him old Enfield from the guy he sold it to not too long ago. He just couldn't go without a bike any more.
Sadly I am giving more and more thought to putting the bike up for the year. My free time is rapidly diminishing and the weather is getting worse and worse. Snowed again on Friday and while its gone for right now there is rain predicted for the next couple of days before the snow comes back by the weekend.

The maint. is done, and the tank has Stabl in it. But if a 70° day happens along, I'm ready to go.

I hear ha man, I live in the rain world... the Pac NW. It doesn't get too cold, but it sure as hell rains like a mo-fo. Still I get rides in.
Winter to me means putting the front fender on my bobber!
hahaha

I've ridden all year long here now through two winters.
32° isn't too bad, if you're wearing warm gear and have no wind leaks.
Rain sucks, though.

I ride all year, today I road up to the mountains behind kingman left the house at 500ft, 80 degrees and 25-35 mph wind and up the hill 6000ft 60 degrees and windy, the coldest here is low 20's rode to work but not in the rain

I have done most of what I need to do... but when I put up the bike I yank the battery. No other option really since I have no way to use a battery tender down in my garage...
I went for a ride up Mount Lemmon this weekend. Beautiful, so nice, so fun, so many tight turns. But freaking cold.
I went from 94 in the Tucson Valley to 37 on the peak at Summerhaven, I was shaking it was so damn cold.
On the plus side, I saw pine trees and other trees that had leaves. And they were changing!
