xpdlit: There may be a better way to do this but here's how I get r done. Just right+click on the file and choose 'Open With' and then pick 'Other'. In the window that opens select the app you want to use and then check the 'Always Open With' checkbox. You'll have to do that for each file type but that's better than each file.

Okay, not to be a complete moron here - but the last memory upgrade I did was in a Centris 650 - so I may require a bit of hand-holding here... do I need DIMM, SIMM, RIMM/RDRAM,??.... Also, I think someone here said you had to purchase these things in pairs of equal amount - any thoughts/experience with this?...

you'll have better performance if you go with 1x1gb rather 2x512mb.
And if you can afford it you should max it out.
I think the G5's will support 4 or 8gb total.

I'd have to do some research to confirm but I don't think Apple segregates memory like that. It should all be presented as one chunk of RAM that is in turn split between the two processors. It's not about the way it breaks down physically.

I'm going to agree with dirty.
Each proc doesn't get its own chip.

bump: Looking at Apple's site i've learned a few things. The G5's support dual channel RAM so yes you'll want to buy a matched pair. Keep in mind this doesn't mean 1 chip is for 1 processor it's just a method of increasing performance similar to RAID with harddrives. Also they show the appropriate RAM to be DDR whereas above you've listed DDR2. Where did you find this RAM?

You can use Apple's site for reference.

Just a guess I would say you don't have a 'Dual Core' setup. That's make a big difference because DDR2 and DDR are not the same thing nor are they compatible. I would suggest you follow the apple link I posted above and use the info they provide on the page that lists memory appropriate for your system to search Newegg. I think you really need DDR400 (PC3200) in a matched pair setup (i.e. dual channel). Like something listed here -> http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.asp?N=2010170147+70001273+70002116+700 02893&Submit=ENE&SubCategory=147

not in this case. I haven't used an external charger once--only the included usb connect cable.
Also, instead of a progress bar that shows the time or volume at the bottom of the screen is just 5 dots.

I'm going to give it a restart/reset and see what happens.

What are you charging it on? Windows machine or Mac? If it's a Windows machine, is it a laptop or a desktop? I've found that laptops do a horrible job of charging iPods. If it's a Windows machine, you have to make sure the iPod is mounted, so that the system periodically accesses it, otherwise it will charge extremely slowly. If all you have to charge it is a Windows laptop, I would highly recommend buying a USB or Firewire wall charger unit, as they do 100X better job than most Windows machines, in my experience.

The "5 dots" is the rating system; you can select whether you want 0 - 5 stars. Pressing the center button will cycle through the available display options.

even though I'm sure you're not an ipod expert either.

I have lots of experience and have been trained in all things Apple (except the Xserve... only rudimentary knowledge of that).

So seriously, Classic+New Mac=How?

You have to run it within Classic within OS X. You have to have the Classic OS installed on your HDD, and then double-click the program to launch Classic and then the program within it. Otherwise you can launch the programs from within the Classic system preference.

Unless you mean with the new Intel Macs, in which case I don't think they have any Classic support. Get with the times, mang.

I think the G5's will support 4 or 8gb total.

The older revision G5 PowerMacs supported 8 GB of RAM, while the new ones support 16 GB (8 x 2 GB = yikes). You must install the RAM in pairs, or you can fry your logic board. The newest revision uses DDR2, whereas the older ones used DDR.
