I'm watching late night USA and they are playing a movie called "Cat's Eye". Thats the same thing as a Stephen King story I read 10 times Night Shift. About 30 years ago. I loved that book. King is one author I hate to be put in film, because it always sucks, But he's my favorite dirty treat. I love reading him, but hate seeing his stuff on film. Does not Translate. Tell me your King stories.

Mine? Well I keep thinking of The Tommyknockers. My favorite novel. I keep thinking of the rampant coke machine slaying everyone near it!

Also, I love the 4th Dark Tower book beyond all, even The Stand.

The Shining was good...I think mainly because he DIDN'T try to stay absolutely true to the book.

It's late, but I think I'll watch the Shawshank Redemption again...I need something to get the pure annoyance that is Eternal Sunshine out of my head.

Shawshank Redemption was a tremendous film
The Shining was also pretty damn good, but I'm biased towards Kubrick so..

I must admit my King readings are not exactly extensive. I've only read Shawshank, Gerald's Game and 'It'.
'It' was an absolutely brilliant book and an absolutely terrible film so in that sense I see what you're saying. Stupid TV movies.

I for one thought It was an extremely refreshing take on the whole horror film business...normally, the villain/creature/whatever is built up slowly, through shadowy glimpses, and finally revealed in his true horror near the climax. This is frightening, of course, and that's why everyone does it...but it's almost more horrifying, in a way, to have the monster strut around in broad daylight, confident in the knowledge that nobody can see him...except for you. There's an almost "Gaslight" quality about it...and Tim Curry was brilliant, in a role that didn't really require that much brilliance.

These are the SK books that I've read:

Bag of Bones
DT I - VII
Insomnia
Firestarter
The Talisman
Black House
Desperation
The Regulators
Different Seasons
The Stand
and I'm almost finished with Needful Things

Yeah, I read a lot....no, I don't go out that often. Why?

But seriously, though, The Stand (although it's the size of a phone book) is a damn good book. If you can hunt down the associated ABC Miniseries, that's not too shabby either.

"The Stand" and "The Dark Tower" series are brilliant.

"It" was a great book

Of all his short stories, the one that they are cleaning up the rat problem under the building, and come across the giant mutant thing really creeped me out the most.

I love most of his stuff, the only one that I thought was kind of weak was "Gerald's Game".

There was this short story, in one of the Bachman books, I think, where this guy back in the early 1900's got shipwrecked on an island. Anyway, he was a DR and was transporting a ton of morphine with him and that was all he had when he beached. Anyway, he starts getting hungrier and hungrier, and tries to kill a seagull but breaks his leg pretty badly doing it.

Great short story, and I won't ruin the rest of it. I read it when I was about 13 and it scared the shit out of me.

Other than that. The Shawshank Redemption is the best translation to a movie.

I made mention of the fact that a lot of stephen king stories are shit when made into movies as well, and then I realized Stand by Me, Shawshank, the Green Mile, the Shining, Carrie, and a bunch of others are actually pretty good.

He's written off a lot as just a hack, pulp writer, but there's tons of those--why is he so good? Oh, and the DT series is probably definitely my favorite series of writing ever.

Christine
Tommyknockers
The Dead Zone
Insomnia
The Gunslinger

I've also read quite a few more, but those are the ones i've liked the best. In my opinion, the stuff he wrote in the seventies when he was on drugs were better.

This past month my husband re-read all of the dark tower books. I would ask him whats going on in them. Sounds like a pretty interesting series of books. I just dont think i can read all of that. Its a sad thing, but big books discourage me. I have read half of insomnia, and last summer i read a bucnh of short stories he wrote. I wish i could read more and not get so flustered by how big the book is.

Yeah...Shawshank Redemption is teh sex.

It's part of a collection of four stories, the book itself being called the Four Seasons (i think).

Apt Pupil is also part of the series.
