I noticed they finally implemented the long promised "copy to/from computer" feature on tivo (series 2). The new Tivo Desktop software does it all for you.
It takes up about 1.6 gigs for a 30 minute show, and takes about 1.2 times the length of a show to transfer to/from the computer. The files are .Tivo files and are all password protected MPEG2. They only play in Windows Media Player (so far that i've found), b/c you have the enter the password to play it.
My question is this: Is there a program out there yet, or in the works, that allow you to convert AVI/MPEG files to this tivo format? That would be nice, so I could watch other stuff from my computer on my TV.

And, correct me if I am wrong, but shouldn't the router usually be higher than the cards as the signal tends to broadcast downward? Wouldn't putting it in the basement have an adverse effect on the distance?
Derr.. turn the router upside down : )
Hey guys, I figured this was the best place to put this.
I recently read about this firefox extension. The website is http://www.annodex.net/index.html
However, after reading a bit about it, I've come to the conclusion that, while it sounds really cool, I have no clue what they are talking about nor what the extension does. Can anyone help me out with an explanation in layman's terms?

Alright.. you all sold me against Internet Explorer. What do you guys recommend as an alternative? I've considered Firefox, Opera, and Mozilla. What are the pros / cons to each of these?
Firefox and Mozilla are the same thing. I personally have been using firefox for a few months now and LOVE it. Its great, and I've already converted many of my friends who now have sworn off of IE. Get firefox, you'll love it.
got my printer ink refilled last week. worked fine for a few days...just tried to print today, and the cartirdge i had refilled is acting like it's almsot empty again.
i cleaned the heads and did a prime, but the black ink is still all faded.
Do i need a brand new cartirdge instead of a refilled one? (seems to me this is the second time i've refilled it), or have i just fubarred my printer and screwed it up like you read that 'refilling' my cartridges can eventually do?

MoD is right, however I suggest going through the plugins also. I liked the tabbed browsing of Firefox right away, but really didn't cross over right away. However, after being able to completely cutomize Firefox to my exact wishes (almost, still no free money/credit card #s) explorer is no longer used at all.

First, did you refill it right after it emptied (meaning before the inside dried all out)? Basically, I only ask because that was the reason I was always told that refill kits weren't working for me.
As far as my experience goes though, refill kits are a ripoff. They don't last very long at all, often even after priming it/etc the ink comes out all streaky if at all...
My advise would be to return the kit if you can and just suck it up and buy a new cartridge. Costco can have some pretty good deals...
right, i had firefox, not sure what version, but it kept telling me to get v.1.0 so i downloaded it and tried to run it, the first sign of error lis when the i agree point is meant to come up, instead of i agree or i dissagree there is nothing, just two checkboxes with blank space next to them
then i select the top buton and continue, it asks me if i want just the browser or everything, which ever was i choose, when i have selected all i want it tells me that there was an error and microsoft want to know about it.
whats going on!?

i left it in the printer for about 3 days. the guy told me i should have taken it out right away, bla bla bla....but he said he 'thought we should be okay' refilling that one. it worked fine for about a week, so it hought i was set and chucked my receipt and all that. just wondering if it's worth it to buy a brand new cartridge (56 bucks) or if my printer heads (or whatever) are likely fubarred. if that's the case i'll forego the cartridge and just spend 100 or so an a new printer.

Because I'm really out of the loop when it come to graphics cards (and most pc related things to be honest)
I currently have a Geforce MX440 64mb (a rather basic card I'm guessing) and want something with a bit more pizzaz.
Can someone please recommend me something decent?

DolphieGirl, there is lubricant (heh) in printer cartridges that doesn't get refilled from those kits, you have to refill them at the first sign, or even before.
I have found that those refill kits are too much hassle, and either get the generics, or just bite the bullet and buy the ink.

Alright.. you all sold me against Internet Explorer. What do you guys recommend as an alternative? I've considered Firefox, Opera, and Mozilla. What are the pros / cons to each of these?
Opera plug:
Firefox is essentially a rip off of Opera. Opera innovates, Firefox rips it off. Opera has a ton of features built in that many firefox users need a large amount of extensions for to get anywhere near the usability of Opera. Opera has a smaller memory footprint, smaller install size, has a built in mail, chat (IRC), and RSS client, and comes with the flash plugin already installed (and its still smaller than firefox?! *gasp*!!!) There are a TON of features built into Opera that still surprise me to this day. Also, pretty much everything in Opera is customizable to your liking. There is very little that you can't change to meet your own personal tastes. The only downside for many people is that it costs money for the ad-less version ($39 USD). I find this kind of odd since many people apparently don't feel like paying for a super-standards compliant, extremely well coded browser, but that is their choice.
Firefox plug:
Straight from the download, Firefox is probably a lot easier to get used to with your typical computer newb. It mimics the look and feel of IE. Unlike Opera that has a grillion features the first time you download it, Firefox is pretty barebones. This is a plus of sorts, since you do not get lost in all the features and options. There are extensions for everything that you'd ever want firefox to do, and then some, allowing for a massive amount of customization. The coding quality of some of these extensions are questionable, but in general if it causes you problems, just remove it and live on. Extensions are honestly the only advantage firefox has over Opera in my eyes, oh and its free. I guess that is worth mentioning as well.
Personally I would recommend Opera, but thats just from one that walks the enlightened path.
Also, Internet Explorer 7 beta is coming out this summer. So if you -really- like IE, hold tight until the summer for the MS cavalry to arrive.
Opera is ass.
Anybody recommend a really nice wireless access point? I'm looking for some long range shit. here.
Can anyone recommend a decent spam blocker for a microsoft exchange server? ever since our website went live we've been getting more and more spam at our office.
baz depending on how much area you are trying to cover + building layout, you may want to use more than one router or take advantage of a repeater.

There isn't an HTML code for a heart. You can create an image and throw that in some html, or do it like screw did. You could try the font tag and using wingdings or somthing like that. But, then you might be screwing the 10 people who don't have that font.

Well, ahem... <places foot in mouth/head up ass> ... I didn't really check anywhere. I was just told that a couple of years ago that the & codes don't work in some cases.
Is it possible to rip embedded video from a website? I get as far as getting the video playing in an outside window of WMP, but the "save as" feature is grayed out. Is there a way around this, or a program that allows me to record video being played on WMP?
The reason a video is embedded is so no one can steal. it. I don't believe anyone can help you because it would violote the acceptable use policy.

What kinds of games you playing? What's your system have in it already as far as processor,RAM, etc.?
I can tell you that for any recent games you will certainly want something better.
First off, that's a Geforce, not a GeForce 2,3 or 4, but the very first in the product line, which started a few years ago. Secondly, it's an MX version which is their "budget" version, meaning it's the lowest of their low. (sorry, I hope this doesn't sound insulting, I'm just trying to give you the idea of where your card stands.)
Now, based on what you have in your system and what games you'll be playing we can give an accurate recommendation on what card to buy. Personally I'm an avid gamer and computer nerd and got a GeForce 6800 Ultra w/256mb of on board DDR3 vid RAM for christmas which is the top (or was a few months ago) card (save for SLI cards) you can have, but it will run you about $450. BUT, it can play HL2 at 1600x1200 resolution with 8xAA and 4xAS at 70fps....<drool> sorry, /end threadjack

any ideas why it doesn't work for me?
Raj - link works for me in Firefox too. One possibility in IE is a corrupt cookie - stored under your local profile in %username%\cookies. Try looking for one that has %username%@fatwallet.com - this'll have 'persistent' web site data like your web username stored in it. Try moving it out and seeing if click-through goodness results.

You are 'tarded?
Seriosly though I have no idea. Have you tried clearing your cache/cookies/history and trying again? Do you have an account with them? When did it last work? What has chanced on your computer since then?

As for what I'm working with, it's a P4 2.40GHz with 768MB of RAM running XP.
As for what I'm playing, HL2 and Call of Duty: United Offense, seem to be the games I'm mostly wasting my life playing.
I was thinking of maybe a Radeon X800 Pro? (by Gigabyte) Not too expensive with good results from what I've read...

So I downloaded Firefox. Now when I want to quote something in the forum, I have to copy and paste it, and place the tags around it. With IE, all I had to do was highlight the chosen text, and click on the quote tag, and it's automatically place it in the text box. How do I make Firefox do this.

YOBO, highlight the text you want to copy, then do a simple drag and drop into this text box.
Highlight text, then click the quote tag.

will give you an idea oh where the cards stand.
The top card has a PE after it, which means PCI Express bus, which you don't have, and 99% of most people don't have either (including me), so ignore it. All the others would be usuable by you, some more so then others depending on if your AGP is 4x or 8x.
The biggest question now, is, how much do you want to spend?
