Been listening to Halford III: Winter Songs.

Yep, it's a Rob Halford Christmas album.

Probably the funniest shit I've heard since Pat Boone's metal album.

Suggestions???

First of all, you're an a-hole because now 'Mudvayne' is in my Google search history.

Second, yeah, Gojira is probably a good start for you.
For something that might help in seguing you in,
Try some of the German death metal bands like Neaera and Machinemade God's earlier stuff.
You might also try the Italian band Abel Is Dying.
Also, you need to listen to Mastodon - Remission

you don't NEED to listen to mastodon, because then you'll want to see them live, and then you'll be disappointed. I would highly suggest you listen to remission, but then stop...

let's see here:

Mors Principum Est is a great band.

Devildriver is the fucking tits. Since you used to listen to numetal, you undoubtedly listened to coal chamber at some point, well their lead singer decided to stop being a vagina, devildriver is the result.

Ive always been a big fan of The Black Dahlia Murder. They're definately more uhhh, well, most people in this thread probably don't like them very much.

Here might lie your problem - these new songs are a throwback to that 'classic' era, but lyrically and musically are just as good as any of those old tracks. IMO this album is 'classic' era slayer - thats why i like it so much. Diabolus in musica, God hates us all or Christ Illusion this album aint.

Decided to join the cool kids and listen to the new Slayer disc.

I dunno. Most of it sounded to me like they were just going through the motions. Only Psychopathy Red really hit me as having the energy of Slayer at their best. The rest isn't bad, but it just seems to lack focus.

Yeah, it's definitely a "grower". I didn't care that much for it at first, but after a dozen spins, I'm really starting to like it. Not their best work by any stretch, but a solid album, definitely better than Christ Illusion or either of the mid-late 90s albums.

Hmmm. You may be influencing me to subject myself to some more of Araya's last nerve shredding vocals. But I will feel better knowing there won't be a guest appearance by Fred Durst or something on one of the tracks.

I gave a listen to "Njord" by Leaves' Eyes, because Amazon recommended it and they know from my purchase history that I'm a sucker for symphonic metal with an operatic female vocalist. (And I still want Sharon den Adel of Within Temptation to have my babbies.)

Didn't care for it at all. It sounded as if Britney Spears started singing for Nightwish.

Leaves Eyes singer(s) vocals are just over the top whispy. It seems like trying a bit too hard for the ethereal vibe. I listened to their Lovelorn cd on the recommendation of a buddy "If you like symphonic metal you're gonna love this shit!" and then ... oh, I see how this cd is...

This stuffs super subjective with a heavy dose of the to each his own factor, but I'd recommend trying out Epica if you haven't already. Atleast their vocalist can sing with a degree of range.

But Mors Whatever has a female singing, too,
And unless you're a band like Salome,
That means bad.
